Kinscript Courses

Overview

A self-hosted Progressive Web App made for a young learner. Three full courses sit under one home page with shared XP, streaks and badges, and code runs in the browser, so there is nothing to install beyond a static file server.

The problem

A child learning to program wants several languages, and each course lives on a different site with a different look, no shared progress and a need for a connection. Comparing how the same idea is written in each language is left to the learner.

The approach

Make the comparison the product. Every example has a Show JS panel: Python examples carry hand-written JavaScript equivalents, each tested against the real Python output with any difference explained in a note, and CoffeeScript and TypeScript show their real compiler output. The JavaScript runs in a sandboxed worker so the outputs can be compared directly. Everything, including the compilers, is vendored, so it works offline once installed.

Outcome

• 262 Python lessons with 10 projects, 153 CoffeeScript lessons with 10 projects, and 46 TypeScript lessons with 82 practice problems, flashcards and exams
• 372 hand-written JavaScript equivalents, each checked against the real Python output
• Installs as an app on Linux, Windows, macOS and ChromeOS, and works offline
• Layouts from 360px phones to desktops, in light and dark themes

What it does

• Show JS on every example

  A learner can see what an idea looks like in plain JavaScript beside the language they are learning, and run both.

• One home page, shared progress

  Combined XP, a day streak, lessons done, badges, a 20-week activity map and a continue-where-you-left-off card across all three courses.

• Sign-in that is optional

  Guest progress stays in the browser. Signing in with Google merges progress across devices instead of overwriting it.

• Practice that checks itself

  Quizzes, fill-in-the-blanks and auto-checked exercises in every lesson, plus level tests and a certificate exam.
