TempGlance

A small, private CPU temperature monitor for Linux, macOS and Windows.

Overview

Shows how hot your CPU is and how hard the fan and CPU are working, keeps a history, and warns you before heat becomes a problem. It also spots the classic sign of a dusty fan: a computer that runs warm while doing almost nothing.

The problem

Most people only learn their computer is running hot when it gets loud or slow. The tools that show temperature tend to be heavy, ask for administrator rights or phone home.

The approach

Three native apps rather than one cross-platform shell, each built with what its operating system already provides. They only read sensors the system already exposes, have no internet access, need no admin password, install no drivers and never write to the hardware. Each version is a handful of readable source files.

Outcome

  • Runs in the Linux panel, the macOS menu bar and the Windows notification area
  • Nothing is sent anywhere: no network access at all
  • Windows needs nothing installed, since PowerShell and WPF are built in; macOS ships as a signed app

What it does

  • Now and history

A live gauge coloured by temperature, with fan speed, CPU activity and the last ten minutes, and the lowest, average and highest temperature over the last hour, day or week.

  • What is heating it

On Linux and macOS, the programs using the most CPU, with Quit and Force quit. On every platform, one button named after the app you were just using that asks it to close.

  • Warnings that do not pile up

Alerts for a hot CPU, thermal throttling, and staying warm while idle. A new warning replaces the previous one, so one dismissal clears it.

  • Heat health

On Linux, a weekly idle temperature, a time-to-clean-the-fan notice and a monthly summary. Laptops also show how much charge the battery holds compared with when it was new.
